Witnesses to the Holy Mass and other sermons

by Dom Bede Camm O.S.B.

“Witnesses is an extraordinary book about love and sacrifice for the Eucharist! Reading it will inspire a greater devotion to the Catholic faith, especially the Mass. Once I began reading, I couldn’t put it down. Once I finished, I couldn't wait to share it with others… Having read the book, I feel a greater desire to defend my faith even unto death. Thank you!" - Dede Laugesen, Director, Holy Baby! DVDs and President, The Rosary Project-

"The gripping stories recounted will inspire not only a devotion to these saints, but also a renewed passion for the holy Mass that these holy men and woment shed their blood to preserve." - The Catholic Answer-March/April 2005

At the dawn of the 20th century, six sermons were preached by a Benedictine priest in commemoration of men and women who loved God more than they loved themselves and who paid the ultimate price for their faithfulness. Now, at the dawn of a new century we can revisit their sacrifices and examine our own consciences to discover how much we love the God who gave us His only Son on Calvary and in the Holy Sacrifice of the altar.

WITNESSES TO THE HOLY MASS and other sermons was originally preached to inspire the faithful of England by recalling the sacrifices of the English martyrs who suffered during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. As England needed conversion in those days, so too do our hearts need conversion today! Be inspired by the 40 Martyrs of England and Wales!

Read about Sts. Thomas More, John Fisher, the Carthusian martyrs and many others who won the crown of martyrdom during this upheaval in England.

Two Towers - the de-Christianization of America and a Plan for Renewal

by John D. Meehan (co-founder and former President of Magdalen College, Warner, NH.)

On December 22nd 2005, Pope Benedict XVI met with the Roman curia and discussed the impact of the 2nd Vatican Council on the Church. Our Holy Father said that there were two interpretations of the Council. One is of "hermeneutics of discontinuity and rupture" ... "between the pre-conciliar and post-conciliar Church." (We have all seen and suffered much from this false interpretation). The second interpretation is "the hermeneutics of reform" and is undertaken with a view to tradition.

This was a most important address by our Holy Father, rejecting "discontinuity and rupture" - "the spirit of Vatican II", in favor of a reading of the Vatican II documents in light of, and in continutity with, 2000 years of Church tradition.

John Meehan, in his book, Two Towers, proposes a plan to implement the documents of Vatican II in light of and in continuity with the tradition of the Church.

But first, he uncovers the deep-seated historical and cultural roots of the crisis in the Catholic Church in America - showing how the Two Towers of Faith and Morals have been separated.

Mr. Meehan makes the case that the crisis will be resolved with the true implementation of Vatican II, especially with respect to the laity, catechesis, and liturgy.

Russell Shaw says: "John Meehan's Two Towers is a carefully reasoned, deeply felt, and frequently moving analysis of the present-day crisis of the Catholic Church and what must be done to respond to the challenge. It deserves a place in the growing body of literature that not only urges the authentic renewal of the Church according to the mind of Vatican Council II, but cogently explains how to carry it out."

The Maccabees - Forgotten Heroes of God

This work is adapted for the 1st and 2nd book of Machabees of the Douay-Rhiems version of the Holy Bible. Minor editorial changes have been made for clarity. The two books have been merged into one to be chronological by the editors at Requiem Press.

The historical context for the story is provided in the introduction by Warren H. Carroll. Thus, this inspiring true story is more accessible to all.

The underlying truths about faith, prayer, and God's love for his people can be realized from the reading of this oft overlooked book.

This is an epic tale of war, heroism, treachery, and tragedy. It is from a time when God and religion were the center of existence for all men and women. This is a story of a woman and the strength she gave her seven sons. It is the story of an old man who realized manhood and wisdom meet in old age. It is the story of a man and his five sons who left everything and sacrificed their lives to restore God's laws. But mostly it is a tale of the power of faith and prayer- of God's hand in man's work.

The story of the family known as the Maccabees took place in the 2nd century before the birth of Christ, when the children of Israel were being persecuted by the Gentiles. Out of Israel one family rose up a father and his five sons to lead the Jews to victory over the persecutors and to restore the Temple that had been profaned by them. One of the Maccabees brothers, Judas, was surnamed Machebeus - that is, the hammer - and thus the family takes on his name as God's Hammer against the enemies of His people.

Giving Up Stealing for Lent! (and other family stories)

by Brother Charles Madden OFM Conv.

If you find you need some cheering on the Sundays during Lent this year (or anytime for that matter), try Giving Up Stealing for Lent and other family stories. (I have read a few of these aloud to the kids-a few I haven't). It is a fun book, but not without it's lessons.

The Maddens of Baltimore will surprise you, comfort you, make you laugh until you cry, and make you cry until you laugh again! From games of “pitch” to petty thievery, from over zealous confessions to exacerbating obedience, there is truly never a dull moment!

These are true stories about a real family, as told by the youngest brother. They are much more than just a collection of humor. Together, they weave a tapestry about family life-the way it should be lived and enjoyed. The virtues and the vices, the laughter and the frustration, the happiness and the mourning, the prosperity and the poverty: the family is the first school of love.

Read excerpts here and here and here.

Giving Up Stealing was also excerpted in Catholic Men's Quarterly.

Brother Charles Madden, OFM Conv. was born in Baltimore, MD in January 1940, the youngest of eleven children. He is the author of “Freemasonry: Mankind’s Hidden Enemy” (TAN), “The Mini-Catechism" (Requiem Press) and has written numerous articles over a 30-year period for Immaculata Magazine.
